Meeting the Needs of People Living with Amputation

An amputation is the removal of a limb as part of treating an injury, disease or infection. An amputation can also occur following a severe accident or trauma. One of the most common reasons for an amputation is poor blood flow. There are some risks associated with amputation, such as joint deformity, tissue death, blood clot, or a bruised area or hematoma.

If you or a loved one has undergone an amputation, Quantum® motorized wheelchairs can help provide greater mobility and independence to amputees. A patient with one or more amputated limbs can be fitted for a complex rehab power wheelchair that is designed to meet their mobility and quality-of-life needs. The Edge 3 electric wheelchair can be fitted with a variety of power seating and positioning components and is available with optional 4.5 mph iLevel® power adjustable seat height. Users can drive at 4.5 mph while elevated up to 12 inches, enabling them to quickly and safely cross streets and parking lots. iLevel technology features patented Extra Stability Technology® to enhance safety for completing Mobility Related Activities of Daily Living (MRADLs), including transferring, reaching, cooking, grooming and toileting.

Amputation

Some amputees may benefit from power positioning on his or her power wheelchair. TRU-Balance® 3 Power Positioning Systems are highly adjustable and offer an array of options including power tilt, power recline, power tilt and recline, power articulating leg rests, power articulating foot platform and iLevel. TRU-Balance 3 provides an appealing look and feel and maximizes functional independence.

Depending on the type and extent of the amputation, an amputee may benefit from using Q-Logic 3 Advanced Drive Controls to operate their power wheelchair. Highly customizable and expandable, Q-Logic 3 maximizes user independence. It is standard with Bluetooth®, enabling an individual to operate his or her tablet or smart phone via the Q-Logic 3 screen. In addition, optional Q-Logic 3 EX Enhanced Display allows amputees to use the controller on their electric wheelchair operate a wide range of appliances in their home that use infrared (IR) remote controls.

To ensure better comfort, an individual who has an amputation may also benefit from a wheelchair cushion. Stealth Products® Wheelchair Cushions provide various functions respective to each cushion including skin protection and positioning, general use and more. The Spectrum® Foam Wheelchair Cushion features a breathable and moisture-wicking CoolCore® technology cover.
